The
Borneo Project is an environmental justice initiative that partners
with indigenous organizations and communities to permanently protect
and manage ancestral rainforests.
We train, equip and give small grants to partners for: 1) Indigenous Lands Protection: community mapping for grassroots conservation and development planning; legal aid for court cases to secure land tenure and halt forest destruction; paralegal trainings for villagers to learn about human rights, civil rights, and resource rights. 2) Natural Resource Management: reforestation of degraded areas with native trees; negotiating and demarcating community-protected areas; establishing community gardens for organic vegetables and medicinal plants, documentation of traditional uses of rainforest resources. 3) Micro-enterprise development: handicrafts marketing; organic cash crops (ie. black pepper); aquaculture; community homestays & ecotourism; and indigenous music and arts promotion. 4) Green Energy: replacing deisel generators with clean microhydro and solar electrification. 5) Borneo Voices: promoting indigenous voices for international awareness and coordinating volunteers to support local peoples' creative efforts. Call us at 510.547.4258 or email borneo(at)earthisland.org for details.
Note: We've sold out of "Nomads of the Dawn" books. Please check back in November, 2005, as we may have more then. The Borneo Project is sponsored by Earth Island Institute, a non-profit, 501(c)3. |
