Welcome to Writers, Photographers and Illustrators

Earth Island Journal is the award-winning quarterly magazine of the nonprofit Earth Island Institute. The Journal covers international environmental news, bringing our readers "Local News from Around the World."

We are looking for investigative journalism and thought-provoking essays that make the subtle, but profound, connections between the environment and other contemporary issues. We want stories that anticipate environmental concerns before they become pressing problems, stories that scan the horizon for the next big issue. Whenever possible, we seek to tell the stories of individuals and communities who are successfully defending and restoring the Earth. On-the-ground reports from outside North America are especially welcomed.

We pay writers 20 cents/word for shorter (1,200-1,500 word) dispatches and for longer (2,500-3,000 word) investigative features.

We prefer that writers query us before submitting a story, unless the manuscript is already written. Please describe why you believe the story is newsworthy, specific angles you will investigate, and who you will interview. The more details you can provide, the better.

We cannot guarantee to run unsolicited submissions. Decisions about what material to publish are up to the editors. The Journal does not respond to unsolicited queries or manuscripts unless material is considered for publication. We are unable to return submissions.

Photographers and illustrators: Earth Island Journal can pay $60/photo. Photos will be returned after publication. Illustrators should first contact the editors to agree upon scope of work.
