A group of experienced triathletes has organized under the name Team Earth Island (TEI) to compete in Eco-Challenge 2000, an extreme sports competition taking place in Sabah, Borneo from August 21 to September 2.
Seeking to highlight environmental problems and promote opportunities for citizens to make a difference, the four TEI members will test their endurance against 75 other squads from 27 countries in a grueling, 300-mile non-stop trek through rainforests, rivers, canyons, and the ocean.
This is the seventh annual Eco-Challenge [www.ecochallenge.com], which began in 1992. Previous locations include Argentina, Australia, British Columbia, and Morocco. Four hours of this year's competition will be broadcast in April 2001 on the USA Network.
TEI consists of biopharmaceutical buyer Terry Berger, journalist David Ferris, sales manager Linda Moffat, and MacWorld editor Michael Penworden. All are avid outdoorspeople who live in the San Francisco Bay area.
Prior to the race, they will do a day of community service in Sabah. They will also be required to carry out all refuse and supplies they bring with them.
TEI will cooperate with Earth Island staff in presenting environmental news and information on its website [www.teamearthisland.com], during public events designed to expose young people to outdoor opportunities, and during the race itself.
