Genesis Award Winners

International Marine Mammal Project

The Ark Trust's 14th annual Genesis Awards, held in Los Angeles on March 18, honored Masato Sakano of Japan's Circlet and Dolphin and Whale Action Network.

Sakano was saluted for his filming of a dolphin slaughter last October in Futo, Japan. The film was aired by CBS and generated thousands of letters of protest. Sakano worked with EII and the Marine Mammal Fund to expose the killings.

Redwood forest activist Julia Butterfly Hill received a standing ovation after the Doris Day Music Award was presented to the group Kingfish. The band's song, "Sundown in the Forest," was inspired by Julia Butterfly's two-year-long vigil atop an ancient redwood tree that she named "Luna."
