"Green Pages Fund" Honors Visheswar Saklani

"After my soul has left me, plant a tree on my body. All that I could not do in my lifetime, the tree will do for me ... Let the trees be our teachers."
- Visheswar Saklani

INDIA - For the last 50 of his 80 years, Visheswar Saklani has been planting trees in Uttar Pradesh - in memory of his dead brother, his first wife and the childhood forest he saw slowly vanish with the coming of roads and logging trucks.

In the years since India's independence, Visheswar has planted more than 200,000 trees. He has been attacked with stones and jailed for planting trees on government land, but thanks to his tireless efforts, a new forest now covers the mountains surrounding the village of Pujargaon. The Journal's Green Pages Fund is proud to send a $200 check to the VVP Foundation [42-A Subhashg Road, Dehra Dun, 243001, UP, India] to help expand the dream of Vishwar's forest.
