Programs Associate – South Bay & Van Pool Coordinator (20 hrs/week)
Summary:
This Part Time position will report to BAWT’s CEO and Founder and is meant to be the Program Associate supporting start-up operations of the Milpitas, satellite BAWT office. The highest level of independence is expected. Initiative and a proactive approach are a must. The top priority responsibilities associated with this position are as follows: client (youth worker & teacher) recruitment and relationship management; research and logistics in start up of BAWT’s newly funded Van Pool program; support to fund development staff; managing volunteer growth, gear inventory control, S. Bay specific marketing efforts and efficient operations overall.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role with diverse populations of adults and youth.
- Advanced computer skills, with knowledge of MS Office Applications, and familiarity with database software.
- Ability to perform as the primary contact for all of BAWT’s S. Bay operations.
- Experience in basic aspects of non-profit fundraising and development.
- Experience leading backpacking trips
- Demonstrated written and public speaking skills.
Strongly Desirable:
Familiarity with California’s Wilderness and Open Space Areas. Strong background in education, classroom or experiential. Fluency in Spanish. Inventory experience.
Responsibilities:
- Program Management - (70%)
- Training and Support to Youth Serving Organizations & Schools
- Oversee all agency programs, services and activities. Ensure that goals and objectives are met and that quality services (trainings, gear loan program, van pool use) are coordinated with other agencies. Provide for periodic review and modification of programs to meet community needs.
- Ensure that outdoor equipment inventories are correct and sufficient to meet demand for services.
- Ensure that agency’s S. Bay interns and volunteers are effective in carrying out the agency’s mission.
- Recruit, support and partner with the agencies’ (30+) volunteers and interns, including committee work, special projects and ad hoc meetings.
- Coordinate, facilitate and/or teach BAWT backpacking programs by guiding groups in California’s wilderness national and state parks.
- Logistics and start up of BAWT’s Van Pool Program (the bulk of the first two months on the job)
- Coordinate with existing youth organizations to determine appropriate partnership guidelines for use with Vanpool Program.
- Work closely with BAWT’s CEO to purchase appropriate vehicles for the program.
- Manage up to two vehicles being used by up to 10 organizations to transport youth into the open spaces and wilderness areas of California.
- Fund Development & Fiscal Control (5%)
- Support the development of a diverse funding base to support the agency’s program priorities, particularly at a local- South Bay specific- level.
- Oversee and report on ongoing costs for the S. Bay office.
- Work closely with CEO and Founder and S. Bay Committee Chair to create and implement the S. Bay specific parts of the agency’s overall fundraising plan.
- Public and Community Relations (20%)
- Maintain accurate, current content for BAWT web site including trip reports, updates on personnel, etc., etc.
- Work closely with CEO and Marketing Committee Chair to create and implement the S. Bay specific parts of agency’s marketing plan.
- Represent BAWT in the community. This includes but is not limited to: Youth Agency recruitment phone calls and site visits, conferences, staff workshops, special events.
- Source, grow and maintain relationships with S. Bay focussed reporters and media outlets with the goal of increasing earned media for BAWT and BAWT’s Milpitas office.
- Administrative Operations (5%)
- Provide and maintain adequate and appropriate services, facilities, equipment and information systems in accordance with the organization’s budget.
- Increase bureaucratic efficiencies wherever possible.

- Regularly attend Marketing Committee & Program Committee
Compensation: $13 - $18/hr. DOE. Outdoor trips to some of California’s most beautiful spots. Access to BAWT’s extensive Outdoor Gear library.
