Want a Life-Changing Vacation or Internship?

Why just sit on the beach or be a tourist when you can totally immerse yourself in another culture and soak up all the pleasures of seeing a foreign country from an insider's perspective? By Global Service Corps

March 1, 2003 Why just sit on the beach or be a tourist when you can totally immerse yourself in another culture and soak up all the pleasures of seeing a foreign country from an insider's perspective? Now is the time to plan if you are considering that unique summer adventure or student internship. Global Service Corps (GSC) offers service-learning trips each month in Thailand and Tanzania. These cultural immersion trips include homestays with local families. You live, eat and experience the country with a host family who generously opens its doors and traditions to you. Projects include Health, Education, Sustainable Agriculture, HIV/AIDS education, and an emerging Buddhist Immersion Program. (see below for full description)

We work closely with each participant to tailor the project and experience to your needs and interests. You may choose from short-term, long-term and student internships programs ranging from 3 weeks to several months depending on your wishes.

A special summer international health internship is offered for students in pre-med and healthcare as well as healthcare professionals interested in international healthcare. Volunteers may shadow doctors and nurses and observe the operations of most facets of a hospital or healthcare facility. Or they may join in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa, educating communities, teachers and students in HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.

Global Service Corps now offers college credits for an additional tuition fee through SUNY-Albany if your own institution does not offer credit for overseas service-learning programs. Please call us at 415-788-3666 x128, drop us an e-mail at gsc@earthisland.org, or visit our website at http://www.globalservicecorps.org/ for more program and country information, fees and an application. Contact Global Service Corps today to find out how you can volunteer internationally and see a country in a whole new way!

GSC now has an emerging Buddhist Immersion Program. Volunteers can teach English to monks at monasteries, or "Wats" two days a week. The remainder of the week, they teach at local schools. While at the monasteries, participants have the opportunity to experience the workings and day-to-day life of the monastery. They also interact with monks and novice monks and may join them in some of their daily activities. This fascinating program would appeal to people of all ages and interests. Those with a specific interest in Buddhism, Asian Studies or Comparative Religions would find this program of special value.
