The 3rd Annual David Brower Day Celebration

And Photo Gallery

July 3, 2003 Oakland Tribune story

Enthusiastic volunteers and picture perfect weather made the third annual David Brower Day celebration a party worthy of its namesake. About 75 people gathered on July 1 at Oakland's Arrowhead Marsh to restore some of the East Bay's last remaining wetlands -- rooting out invasive species, transplanting native seedlings and gathering litter from the creeks and shore. The event was co-sponsored by Earth Island Institute, Save The Bay and EarthTeam and marked what would have been David Brower's 91st birthday.

Brower Legacy Field Director Mikhail Davis and Max Harper, BYA '02, kicked off the event with a few words about Dave and our connection to the Earth. Ken and Bob Brower, Dave's sons, grandson David C. Brower and brother Joe Brower all joined in the festivities. Daughter-in-law Shirley Richardson-Brower brought a group of youngsters from the South Berkeley YMCA. Sylvia McLaughlin spoke and Mikhail read the official Mayoral proclamation declaring it David Brower Day. Birthday cake and ice cream topped off the afternoon of community and fun. Mark your calendars now for next year's Brower Day celebration!
