Delegation of Indigenous Leaders from Uma Bawang, Sarawak Scheduled to Speak in California
Presented by the Borneo Project October 10 - 24, 1998

The Borneo Project: FALL '98 UPDATE
The Uma Bawang "longhouse" along the Baram River of Borneo is home to an indigenous community who has lived a unique and ecologically-sound lifestyle for generations. Like many indigenous communities in Sarawak, Malaysia, they cultivate hill rice, hunt, fish and collect food, medicines and other materials from the world's oldest rainforest.

Due to the onslaught of globalization, the people of Uma Bawang and surrounding villages now face corporate logging, mega oil-palm plantations, and a loss of customary land rights. With little resources, indigenous leaders have been fighting back for two decades.

From October 10 - 24, a delegation of indigenous leaders from Uma Bawang will be visiting California to share their stories and perspectives. The Borneo Project of Earth Island Institute has arraigned a series of speaking engagements for the public. We urge you to come learn more about their non-violent resistance and unique struggle to maintain a communal life-style based on sound economic and environmental principles. Find out what the newspapers do NOT tell you. Understand how, we can contribute to the effort for social and environmental justice in Borneo!
