Sustainable Economic Development
Plan for Tainan County Coastal Area, Taiwan

by SAVE International

Faculty and students from the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at U.C. Berkeley and National Taiwan University have been developing a plan for the Chiku area of coastal Tainan County in Taiwan. But their work is pitted against a petrochemical plant that requires filling one of the last lagoons in Taiwan, diverting water from other watersheds, and will likely send the most rare and endangered black-faced spoonbill into an inescapable extinction vortex. This report is an attempt at outlining a sustainable development strategy for this sensitive region.
