The History of NAI'A

In 1991, Michael Reppy commissioned John Shuttleworth to design an all-out 30' racing trimaran for singlehanded racing in the Pacific Ocean. NAI'A was built by Marc Ginesty in the San Francisco Bay Area and launched in 1992.

NAI'A is built of all carbon fiber / foam / epoxy making her very light-weight with a 49' carbon-fiber, boomless wing mast. Having such a high power to weight ratio, NAI'A was extremely fast in flat water, but proved unstable in the open ocean.

Capsizing in her first race off Santa Cruz, California in the summer of 1992, NAI'A was salvaged and repaired. At 30' she remained unstable to race to her potential, so a major rebuilding took place.

NAI'A Grows

In the Winter of '94-'95, boat builders Bob Dixon and Scott Shaffer lengthened NAI'A by six feet and added a carbon fiber boom for easier reefing abilities. The result was dramatically increased stability and performance. NAI'A began to win races on San Francisco Bay!!

The final improvement was the addition of a bow mounted, articulating spinnaker pole for optimum spinnaker running in the 1996 Singlehanded Transpac Race.
