Singlehanded Transpacific 1996
San Francisco to Kauai

Michael opted out of both the 1992 and 1994 Transpacs because of the stability problems. With her new 36' incarnation, NAI'A was ready for the 1996 Transpac to Kauai, but on the first night, racing in rough seas, NAI'A developed a leak in the daggerboard case and Michael returned to San Francisco for repairs. Launching 3 days behind the fleet, he finished in 10 days 15 hours from the restart. The extra 3 days put him second behind BAD BOY, an F-31 trimaran, the only other multihull in the race.

The experience gained in driving NAI'A off the wind in the tradewinds will be invaluable in the upcoming run to Japan.
