    Commentary by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan delivered by Mrs. Nane Annan to the American Museum of Natural History (May 14, 2002)
  • The Jo'burg Memorandum: "Fairness in a Fragile World"
    Sixteen authors, eminent activists, politicians, intellectuals, and managers from across the world joined forces to produce this Memorandum for the World Summit and to contribute to the debate on both the desired outcomes of the Summit and the critical path for the sustainable development agenda in the next decade. The authors argue that poverty reduction is critical to moving global society toward a truly sustainable future.

    In preparation for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in August/September 2002, the International Institute for Environment and Development is launching a new series, The Future is Now, to learn from the past and to inform the future. The aim is to provide an overview of what was accomplished at Rio and the challenges that remain.
  • Thinking Locally? Act Globally! Overcoming the Barriers to Effective Local Action on Sustainable Development (PDF)
    This report by the Northern Alliance for Sustainability to the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) is the result of feedback from a range of NGOs from across Europe on political and institutional obstacles and barriers preventing many local sustainability programmes from achieving their full potential. It was first distributed at CSD 10, acting as the first global prepcom for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
  • Int'l. Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) Briefing Papers
    Published in collaboration with the Regional and International Networking Group (RING), these papers cover climate change, toxic chemicals, drylands management, environmental rights, local Agenda 21s, UN financing for the development process, national strategies for sustainable development, sustainability and trade, ecological debt, poverty and environment, food and agriculture, biodiversity, tourism gender and globalisation, mining and water.
